24 BOOTHS

THE  PAST

BOOTH 1 - ARNE JACOBSEN

Design Rationale:

“If architecture had nothing to do with art, it would be astonishingly easy to build houses, but the architect’s task - his most di cult task - is always that of selecting. “ – Arne Jacobsen

Danish architect and designer Arne Jacobsen ourished for a period of over 50 years at the center of the 20th century. From prototypes for furniture, textiles, wallpaper, silverware, and other household items to blueprints and detailed drawings of hotels, apartment blocks, theaters, banks, and houses, Jacobsen delved deep into the world of design and architecture. His interest in their many diverse aspects fueled his philosophy on the consideration of every detail in the total design of a building or even object, which was the invisible force that drove him to achieve his goals.

e Jacobsen Living Room is inspired by the iconic era of the mid-century modern movement during the 1950’s at the height of this design icon’s career. It depicts a time when the architectural style made use of natural materials that were considered modern at the time and homes were built with a casual airy feel that involved open layouts. From the use of stone and wood elements, to the natural and neutral color scheme accented by a few pops of bright colors, and the inclusion of retro elements such as the jalousie window, vintage light xtures, and eclectic accessories, it is these details that add to the mid-century character of the room. is relatively new style of design to the 1950’s and the attention to the meticulous details that contributes a retro air are the driving force behind the overall design of the room.

BOOTH 3 - HUGO ALVAR HENRIK AALTO

Design Rationale:

Hugo Alvar Henrik Aalto, a Finnish architect and designer, as well as a sculptor and painter, is one of the great masters of modern architecture. His design is known for having a mix of modernist refinement, indigenous materials and personal expression in structure and detail. Aalto’s design philosophy was greatly influenced by nature and organic materials such as wood. Wood for him was a “form-inspiring, profoundly human material”. With his innovative designs and natural forms, he changed the course of design towards organic modernism.

The beauty of Aalto’s work is hidden in his design approach of functionalism but with a strong connection between man, nature and buildings. He was the first furniture designer to use the cantilever principle in chair design using wood. His unique ability to use plywood as a structural and aesthetic element is seen through the Paimio armchair which he had designed for the patients in the Paimio Sanatorium in 1931, particularly for tuberculosis patients where the angle of the back of the armchair was intended to help sitters breathe more easily.

The space is a marriage of both simplicity and complexity. Its design is inspired from Alvar Aalto’s iconic furniture which is the Paimio armchair. The ribbon like curves of its frame and armrests can be seen through the design of the ceiling, walls, bar and floor. With all the play between straight and curve lines along with the rhythm of different wood finishes, the space establishes a raw and natural vibe.

BOOTH 2 - FINN JUHL

Design Rationale:

The approach of our design has been deeply inspired from the 45 chair which breaks the traditional upholstered armrests or which breaks from the tradition of upholstered armrests. Without the armrest, Finn Juhl was able to give function and comfort to the chair because of its curves. We feel strongly about its symbolism that we decided for it to became our inspiration for our floor plan. Our color scheme focused on earthy colors following the notion of Finn Juhl's style and furniture to be organic. A minimalist, we also reflected Finn Juhl's simple but sublime style in our design of the den. The simple yet well thought-of design from Finn Juhl translates and inspires our modern den.

BOOTH 4 - WARREN PLATNER

Design Rationale:

The look of the decade from which the renowned interior designer, Warren Platner, came from displays boldness in shapes, colors and patterns. It traces us back to the 'mid-century cool' theme during the 1960s, brought to our Dining Room today; showing that the Retro Style is highly applicable in today's setting. The strategical play of the different design elements creates a perfect balance between a vivacious and a warm, inviting atmosphere—perfect for a more interesting, spiced up contemporary space. For the young and the young at heart, adventurous go-getters, we offer this to you.

See how the designers have evolved retro styling with, 1. Colors. Salmon, Flame and Mint are the chosen colors. It makes the room bright, lively and exciting with just the right tints, tones and shades—it is, 2. Toned down by the other design elements brought out by the wood and the bricks, of which communicated the warm and welcoming feel of the room through its texture. 3. The lights add more personality to the room and complete the retro-feel together with the creative repurposed objects such as the luggages used as shelves, retro cameras as wall sconces and the wall mounted television with a retro-frame fixed. 4. Finally, the touch of elegance and luxury does it all for a graceful glam by the steel wire works of Platner. Inspired from his design style, we also did an open plan from which you can see the entire area already, and a picture window with a seat attached to the niche, from which is inspired by his work, "Windows on the World" atop World Trade Center. Our drop ceiling designed in a symmetrical curve breaks the rigid wood slats making an entire soft yet striking look—paired with circular drop ceiling with a sky window on center. Lighter shades of wood used on our chevron flooring for more controlled patterns just right and suitable for the room.

"The whole is greater than the sum of its parts." (Aristotle) All of which shows personality and sentimental value put together in an interior piece. Studied work and well-calculated ergonomics, color matters, materials and methods put together our Retro Dining Room for the young and successful fashion entrepreneur and influencer, Yoyo Cao. It's for a very adventurous, creative, and assertive person like you, too.

BOOTH 5 - EERO SAARINEN

Design Rationale:

Eero Saarinen is a Finnish-American architect and industrial designer. His style is considered as neofuturistic or midcentury modern, which focuses on the use of organic and less formal design by using natural shapes and clean, simple curves. His way of designing was like a sculptor by his use of curves and geometric shapes to achieve flowing design. He had once said that his goal was to make modern architecture mainstream.

One of Saarinen’s most iconic furniture pieces is the Tulip Chair. He wanted to design a chair as an integrated whole and this led him to its creation in the 1950s. It was part of his Pedestal collection which featured one legged, pedestal chairs and tables. The Tulip’s fiberglass frame allowed Saarinen to achieve its organic and expressive shape.

These elements are what inspired us in creating this Midcentury Modern Kitchen. We made use of Saarinen’s simple lines and curves which complement our Tulip Bar Stools. The design is a mix of form and function and aside from being a typical kitchen, it makes the room a place for entertaining and showcasing the cabinetry & appliances as well.

BOOTH 6 - CHARLES EAMES

Design Rationale:

Charles Eames became popular in the 1950s and that’s how we started getting ideas on how our interior will look. In the 1950’s one of the key elements were bricks, wall to wall carpet and wood and so, we found a way to mix these elements in one room.

Earth and colourful colors are balanced-The bold colors of Eame’s furniture adds color to the monochromatic color of the interior and with the mix of gray and white on the bookshelf, it doesn’t overpower the design of the interior. The furniture ranges from retro to modern. The play of colors, lines, style, proportion, textures and shapes balance everything out, making it a harmonious home library office.

BOOTH 7 - HANS WEGNER

Design Rationale:

Since our client is a fashion magazine editor/blogger in her mid-20’s, she has a very busy and fast paced lifestyle, but we also wanted to translate her personality to her bedroom. She is a modern person and yet she also has an eye for vintage accessories and decor. She has a very bright, fun, and out going personality so it makes her creative and artistic. She has great interest and taste in music, a book collector, and of course, has a good eye for design. She has  a very interesting personality and we wanted that to show in our design.

Our design is a blast from the past with a few modern touches here and there. We decided to channel the mid-century era because it is slowly being on trend and has gotten its modern twists throughout the past few decades. The best way to mimic this era is through only the best furniture by one of the best furniture designers; Hans Wegner. He was a world-renowned Danish furniture designer who is known for his iconic chair designs (i.e. The Shell Chair, Elbow Chair, Papa Bear Chair, etc.) and also has been one of the great contributors to Scandanavian design.

To make this design possible, we combined the design technique of Hans Wegner and then added modern touches to it to meet the vision and the personality of our client. We first started in choosing the color scheme to fit her personality which also sets the mood of the interior. We used White as our base color and decided to use pops of Orange, Blue, Teal, Mint Green, and just a hint of Bubblegum Pink because it was very popularly used throughout the mid-century era. As for the design itself, it is made up of clean, straight lines accented with smooth, curved angles and natural elements such as wood and polished concrete to add to the mid-century feel.

BOOTH 8 - EERO AARNIO

Design Rationale:

The Travel in Time, Travel in Space Eero Aarnio is a Finnish industrial designer known for incorporating geometric and neo-organic forms in his furniture design. Aarnio believes that "geometric shapes are the most comfortable forms to hold up the human body." He first came into the interior design field, during the 60s, by revolutionizing the furniture industry. He break away from the straight rigid lines of the current trend of his time and made use of plastic and fiberglass-reinforced polyester in achieving his designs.

Space travel, specially, man's exploration to the moon was a big trend during Aarnio's time and was one of the main influence of his design. This period became to be known as the Space Age. It incorporates rounded, continuous shapes and uses white and reflective surfaces.

These elements are showcased in our Master Bathroom. Our space exudes the aura of space travel representing the industrial feel of a space ship with its simple and seamless design shown by the continuous transition of the wall to the ceiling. The clean lines of the furniture and edges of the fixtures shows of this seamless design. Aarnio's style is a great match with our master bathroom giving off the relaxing vibe helping you relax after a long productive day. We put one of Aarnio's creation as a vanity chair, the cognac chair, to top the icing of the cake. We invite you to come and travel with us through space and time.

BOOTH 9 - MODERN MEDITERRANEAN

Intricate carvings, beautiful arched doorways, and colorful fabrics in the Islamic keyhole design are some of its most recognizable design elements. Since our space is a Lanai, we wanted it to be cozy and relaxing. We wanted it to be a perfect place for a newlywed couple where they can unwind and spend quiet times with each other. We used neutral colors and di erent shades of teal to help the space look and feel cozier. On the right side of the space, we decided to put a sofa bench that sit low on the ground but still o er support and comfort. We designed it like it is oating to create more drama and illusion. We also provided a breakfast nook so that they can enjoy eating outdoors while listening to good music. For the ceiling, we decided to use intricate latticework and tempered glass. e ceiling design is a subtle reference to moorish design style while managing to blend into a unique modern space. e archways in this space shows categorization. e open air and water feature can have a pleasant cooling e ect on the rest of the space.

Applying all the popular Moorish design elements with modern accents and applications, this space represents the versatility and uniqueness of Moorish design style.

They both have a passion for cooking, and prefer healthy eating through home-cooked meals. They always make time for bonding through cooking. BOOTH 15 - MODERN JAPANESE

Design Rationale:

This Modern Master Bedroom embraces the Japanese Aesthetic of Wabi Sabi: A concept, an art, and a worldview of finding beauty in imperfection and profundity in nature.

Simple, slow and uncluttered, the Master Bedroom is specifically designed as a place for rest and solitude. Beholding the principles of the minimum and the appropriate, conformity to nature, elegance and quiet contentment the bedroom translates a holistic experience of tranquility, the feeling of being refreshed and touched within, but with solace and calm.

With the color palette muted, the colors are derived from natural objects and materials expressing an aesthetic sensibility to find the melancholic beauty of impermanence.

Infusing the concept of Wabi Sabi the Master Bedroom is underplayed and modest, a serene and undeclared beauty that waits patiently to be discovered.

Design Rationale:

The primary aim in consideration to creating the design was to incorporate three dens as reading, entertainment and office spaces into a traditional-modern Chinese theme. The design’s content is 70% modern and 30% traditional Chinese pieces. The entertainment room is also divided into two separate rooms which are composed of the media and bar areas. The primary target of the design is to showcase a modern progressive, sustainable and innovative design anchored on a Chinese traditional structure.

Issues encountered and addressed in terms of creating the design were:

1) The most particular issue that was confronted when tailoring aesthetic dimensions of the design was the space in which the design was to be executed. The particular size of the space to be used wherein pieces were to placed had to be put into major consideration, and the design outcome relied on the dimensions of this space.

2) To select different Chinese pieces that would fit modern materials and aesthetics.

3) To design a concept that makes use of contemporary Chinese pieces however without deviating too much from the oriental feel of traditional Chinese interior.

The primary intent of the design structure is to put together different concepts in Chinese modern and traditional aesthetic spheres. Initially, the challenge is to maintain the progressive dynamic culture of modern and traditional aesthetics in order to establish a balance between the two cultural dimensions. Pieces that will be included in the traditional design will take into consideration the aesthetical, functional, spatial dimensions of the design will be parallel to the nature of concepts related to the modern and traditional Chinese culture.

BOOTH 12 - MODERN TROPICAL

Design Rationale:

The beauty of nature lies within the uniqueness and rawness of its elements - the organic shape of the trees, the sound of leaves rustling against one another, the peculiarity of its animals, the blooming flowers, the birds showcasing its vibrant colors and the serene sound of the water. These elements unravel the wonderful world of the tropics.

The rawness and imperfections of natural elements of the tropics surely make it unique and perfect in its own way. Taking that as an inspiration, the materials used in the space are natural, organic and true to its form, executed in a versatile and contemporary approach brought about by the constant evolution of the world of interior design. Concept- wise, nature and modernity may be far off from one another but creating the perfect balance of both brings about a whole new perspective of what a modern sanctuary can be-featured in a MODERN TROPICAL DINING ROOM.

The only way to give justice to the perfect beauty of the tropics is to experience the space with all of the five senses. The sense of sight to appreciate its organic forms and vibrant colors, the sense of smell to complement the beauty of the flowers and greenery, the sense of hearing to experience calmness and serenity, the sense of taste to appreciate its produce and the sense of touch that makes the experience come to life. The beauty of all these is that you can never get enough of it!

BOOTH 14 - MODERN VICTORIAN

Design Rationale:

Ms Cherry B. Garcia is a 21-year old graduating fashion design student of the De La Salle University College of St. Benilde. She comes from an affluent family with businesses in fashion design and jewelries. Her passion in reading classic books and novels gave her enormous collections that she wanted them organized and arranged in a themed library in their house. She wants the renovated library to be reflective of her classic collections with modern touch.

Ms. Garcia demands that her library space should present her career direction as a fashion designer, and personality as someone who is classy and organized. The library-cum-study room should be a fusion of classic victorian and modern interior design. The colors to be used will carry Ms. Garcia's love for neutral colors which shall be embraced by the designers for the color palette of the interior with matching lighting. Simplicity and elegance are two key elements that she wanted to see in the design.

For the space requirements, she wants it big enough to work a pattern, a seating area for guests, enough bookshelves to house her present collections with provision for expansion with an area for research and reading, and a storage facility. Finally, she wants it to be comfortable for work and research with an environment that is conducive to reading.

BOOTH 16 - MODERN FILIPINO

Design Rationale:

With more than 7,100 islands, Philippines is known for having an abundant biodiversity which makes the country a popular tourist destination. Aside from that, the country also has a rich and diverse culture, history and countless natural resources that could be used to produce an innovative design that fulfills both function and aesthetics. With the use of up-to-date techniques and materials, our designs could definitely compete with the international standards.

Using globally known Filipino materials such as rattan and capiz, we veered away from the usual solihiya backed chair or the vintage capiz windows. We wanted to take it up a notch and make these natural materials fit in a luxurious and contemporary home.

The curved honeycomb divider with rose gold capiz panels is a modern take on the traditional FIlipino windows. A perfect mix of warm and cold using dark walnut stains on wood mixed with subtle yet eye-catching pops of rose gold hardware. Simple attention to detail, yet it makes a huge difference. A haven where one can unwind & relax are the essentials in creating a “Modern Filipino Toilet and Bath” that would fit a socialite power couple.

THE  FUTURE

BOOTH 17 - RUSTIC LUXE

Design Rationale:

“The art of creative mixing. Unexpected pairings of colors, textures, and patterns make a home distinctive and inspiring,” defines Rustic Luxe, according to Pottery Barn. In a more understandable manner, it’s the story of a lumberjack meeting a city girl who falls with each other, a mixture of both feminine and masculine tones.

By application, Rustic Luxe is the blending of rustic materials, such as stone, brick, and barn board with luxury items, such as crystal chandeliers, soft plush fabrics and fur, eclectic accessories and metallic accents; the fusion of raw earth, and hand-made elements together with loud yet unique elements of the highest opulence. Another principle includes bringing the ‘outdoor’ element inside without going overboard.

Marrying two very different elements and creating great design juxtaposition that works, generating a classic and timeless look.

BOOTH 19 - ORGANIC OPULENCE

Design Rationale:

“Any transition serious enough to alter your definition of self will require not just small adjustments in your way of living and thinking but a full-on metamorphosis”. A quote from Martha Beck, a famous American sociologist, life coach, author and speaker who helps individuals achieve personal and professional goals. But what is metamorphosis?

Metamorphosis is a change in form from one stage to the next. From something simple and basic into something beautiful like the caterpillar to the pupa and from the pupa to the adult butterfly. Inspired by the transfiguration of the butterfly, we bring changes to the elements around us. We transformed the giver of life, the trees, from log to timber to planks to lumber to a house! From unpolished sedimentary carbonate rock to a boulder to shiny marbles or any natural stones to floors or decorative pieces! We discovered new ways to transform seemingly irrelevant thing to something useful and needed. With the current fast-paced and busy society, we hope to change and bring clean, healthy and stress-free beautiful homes to everyone by practicing sustainability with little alterations.

Metamorphosis. Transformation. Changes. Evolution.

BOOTH 21 - METALLIC GLAM

Design Rationale:

Wine tastes better as it ages. A diamond develops from rigorous heat and pressure. Similarly, metals are innately tough and lustrous, but they become a real wonder if wielded with skill and with the precise intention as to what it’s supposed to do.

This kitchen was crafted to move.

It intends to stir up images of movement, and teases on the possibility that tranquility exists in dynamism. Inspired by the setting sun, and midday brightness at the same time, this kitchen of Tomorrow-land demands to be used by the modern day chef today. It presents a more malleable setting for cooking up today’s #foodporn worthy treats, wherein style doesn’t sacrifice substance, and your next inspired dish could well be just sitting there on the hidden chaise lounge, waiting for you to discover.

BOOTH 23 - FUNK ART

Design Rationale:

Our booth is speci cally designed to cater to a millenial bachelorette in her mid to late 20s, with a more than average income. She is a highly sought a er DJ and a nocturnal partyphile who can be seen spinning in all the biggest events and parties in town. In addition, she is a strong woman with a colorful personality, which she expresses in her fashion. Not surprisingly, her favorite icon is Lady Gaga and her favorite city in the world is New York, the city that never sleeps and the city of dreams.

Highlighting the industrial feel of the Meatpacking District in New York, the interior nishes utilizes rustic bricks, wood planks, black metal and gray stucco walls to echo the thriving subculture underground where Manhattan’s amalgam of actors, musicians, playwrights, dancers, models and tycoons party together. Color scheme is dark, from the ooring up to the ceiling with only pops of neon as accent colors which represents the futuristic Funk Art style.

e inverted triangles of the ceiling forms a tesselation that continues to the headboard. e Lady Gaga lyrics in neon lights hovers on the wall behind a writing desk to evoke a club feel. And the Lady Gaga graffiti on the walls is a bold statement that art comes in many di erent forms; even in previously unconventional mediums, the message had been delivered.

BOOTH 18 - DESIGN DECONSTRUCTED

Design Rationale:

The client is a photography enthusiast with a nose for fine coffee and ears for good music. When not crafting lattes and cappuccinos at his cousin's cafe, Joshua Elefan enjoys travelling the world and capturing its beauty through his camera lens. Home for Josh means jamming on his guitar and sipping on handcrafted brews while lazing out with friends.

The Deconstructivist style is paired down with contemporary elements to achieve a streamlined look. The style is a marriage of refined diagonal lines cutting through spaces, functional materials and modern interiors that is all together polished and encapsulated in timelessness.

BOOTH 20 - ECLECTIC ELEGANCE

Design Rationale:

The dining area is considered the center of family interaction and social gatherings regardless in Filipino homes. Nowadays, however, with the existence of a breakfast nook, the formal dining room is being used less and less, especially when dinner parties are also scarce. For this reason, we have thought of a way to maximize the dining area and be of used for more than thrice a day or for special gatherings. Instead of just having a dining table with chairs, we have designed a hyphenated room that is a dining room, first and foremost, but can be transformed into a library with just a few changes in panels and technology.

In our design, we have given priority to distinguishing the space from being a dining to a library. To achieve this, we have installed sliding panels that easily convert the space without compromising the functions of both. There also multi-functional pieces, such as the dining table, and specific nooks and storage spaces for each area that make the space multi-purpose. Through these elements, our formal dining room is not just a wasted space in between meals, but a room that has the capability to transform into a different one entirely, specifically a library.

BOOTH 22 - AVANT GARDE INDUSTRIAL

Design Rationale:

Industrial style as the name implies, draws inspiration from old factories and machines that mass-produce goods. is style intentionally exposes the building materials that many tried to conceal thus, creates a sense of un nished look and rawness in many of its elements. On the other hand, avant-garde refers to something that is new, unusual, experimenting with new techniques and aesthetic innovations. It pushes the boundaries of what is the norm.

It is projected that variations of industrial style is inevitable thus, may lead to the birth of a new style, Avant-Garde Industrial. Avant-garde industrial style is the use of unusual and experimental elements that is inspired by the industrial style. It is futuristic in nature since it’s a collaboration of the past and what’s new.

is space is designed to serve as a study or library room for a bachelor who works as a writer and a professional photographer. e pièce de résistance of the room is the wooden bookshelf that extends from the oor up to the ceiling that showcases his extensive collection of books and cameras. On the le side of the room, an o ce chair and a writing desk are placed with adjacent cabinets and photos that he shot himself. e designers chose a variety of depths and colors for the cabinets to show the playfulness and creativity of the client’s mind. e desk is inspired from books that are piled randomly on top of each other. On the other side, a lounge chair is placed near the window so that the client may enjoy the view outside where he can draw inspirations for his pictures and stories.

The room showcases neutral delightful textural interplay of grainy, earthy wood, and smooth black and raw concrete wall enhance the mood of the space. e selection of furniture and accessories is based on function more than of a style. Furniture pieces are of neutral tone mixed with contemporary furnishings to achieve a warm yet avant-garde industrial look. To create a contrasting yet neutral palette, the ooring is a combination of ceramic tiles with a polished concrete look and wooden planks. e latest technological innovation, an interactive projector is incorporated with the design to match with the futuristic appeal. Clean lines and lack of clutter characterize this space. It is simultaneously unusual and engineered, bold and refined.

BOOTH 24 - TECH AND TRENDY

Design Rationale:

Trends and technology: two peas in a pod, and two lenses through which one can track man’s progress across generations. The landscape of history has been shaped by ever-changing trends and the continuous development of technology, with both impacting the way we think and the way we live.

In designing the bathroom of the not-so-distant future, the group incorporated the latest technology in bathroom fixtures and design into an aesthetic that is inspired by the trend of escapism.

Defined as “the tendency to seek distraction and relief from unpleasant realities”, escapism translates into the design through different nooks that aim to create spaces that one can “escape” to for rest, rejuvenation, and moments of guiltless disconnection. The use of a muted color palette accented by a mix of textures and geometric forms further ties the trend in, and reinforces the “secret hideaway” ambiance that the space seeks to simulate.
